Deep Tissue vs Swedish: Which Modality Does Your Body Actually Need?

A clinician's guide to choosing pressure — and why most NYC professionals are guessing wrong.

February 2, 2026 · by Sean LeeChong, LMT

Deep tissue is not 'harder Swedish.' It is a different technique with a different target. Swedish addresses superficial circulation and parasympathetic activation. Deep tissue addresses adhesions and chronic holding in the deeper muscle layers.

A useful rule: if you can feel your shoulders touching your ears at 4pm every day, you likely need deep tissue. If you cannot remember the last time you took a full diaphragmatic breath, start with Swedish-led work, then graduate into deep tissue once the nervous system is online.

Our Mud Body Butter Deep Tissue Massage is built to bridge both — therapeutic depth, parasympathetic pacing.
